Marian Anderson House – Virtual Tour

Friday, December 3 at 2 pm

Via Zoom

Register by December 1

$10 per device

Our private virtual tour will take us to all three floors of the museum and will include documentary clips and recordings of the great opera singer, humanitarian, and Philadelphia native. Ms. Anderson bought the 1847 house at 762 South Martin Street in South Philadelphia in 1924. She transformed the small basement into an entertainment center, where she entertained other musicians and relaxed from touring.

On April 9, 1939, Marian Anderson performed in one of the most important musical events of the 20th century when she sang in front of 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial. She was unable to sing at Constitution Hall “because she was black and because there was a white-only-artist clause printed in every contract issued by the DAR” (which owned the Hall).

She became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera on January 7, 1955. She sang at the 1963 March on Washington. In addition, she served as a delegate to the UN Human Rights Committee and as a Goodwill Ambassador for the US Department of State.

The Marian Anderson House has been closed for several years due to severe water damage and offers these special virtual tours.

The fee is $10 a device (computer or tablet.)  If two people plan to watch on the same computer, only one registration is needed. Guests are welcome to watch with you, but if they want to participate from their own home, they need to register.

. Register online and pay with a credit card or call 267-444-4507 and send a check to EFCC c/o Mary Flournoy, 4055 Ridge Ave., Apt. 1301, Philadelphia, PA 19129. Registration deadline – December 1.

NOTE - This program will NOT be recorded.
