An Alaska Uncruise with Roger Marsh Via Zoom This presentation is available on YouTube (19 minutes). Click here to see it. Alaska is not all permafrost and polar bears. The southern part, along the Pacific Ocean, has (relatively) mild temperatures. With six feet of rain a year, the lower slopes are clad in spruce, mosses and lichen. At higher altitudes, heavy snowfall feeds hundreds of glaciers. Wildlife is abundant in the sea and on the land.
Roger will tell us about his recent trip on a small ship, visiting glaciers, hiking in bear country, and viewing whales, seals, otters, and more. The cruise (or “Uncruise” as the company calls itself) spent a week in fjords and coves so wild that a day could go by with no other sign of humans. Small boats took us close to glaciers. The more adventurous passengers hiked steep slopes of temperate rain forest, kayaked among glacial ice, or even snorkeled in the cold water.
