The Math Matriarchs of Bryn Mawr
Presented by Dr. William Dunham
Monday, October 4, 7:00 on Zoom
Presented by Northwest Village Network
In this presentation Dr. William Dunham will introduce us to three remarkable mathematicians who “left deep footprints indeed.” From 1885 – 1935, Professors Charlotte Angas Scott (British), Anna Pell Wheeler (American), and Emmy Noether (German) gave Bryn Mawr a record of women in mathematics unsurpassed by any institution, anywhere. Dr. Dunham will flesh out their stories with plenty of local color – including a real-life assassin in a supporting role.
Our presenter assures us that his talk is aimed at the general audience. No mathematics will appear.
Dr. Dunham, a Research Associate in Mathematics at Bryn Mawr, is an historian of mathematics who has written four books on the subject. He is also in the Teaching Company’s DVD course, Great Thinkers, Great Theorems.
