A Black Woman for President: Shirley Chisholm, Carol Moseley Braun, and Kamala Harris with author Dianna N. Watkins-Dickerson

Presented in cooperation with New Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Throughout US history, only three Black women – Shirley Chisholm, Carol Moseley Braun, and Kamala Harris – have made successfully recognized bids for the office of president of the United States. The author analyzes the speeches announcing their candidacies.

In 1972, Shirley Chisholm boldly asserted her right to lead, despite the multiple barriers of race and gender. In 2004, Carol Moseley Braun’s speech navigated the intersections of identity, representation, and political ambition at a time when Black women in the Senate were still a rarity. Finally, Dr. Watkins-Dickerson analyzes the 2020 bid of Kamala Harris, which blended Black feminist resistance and national unity in an era of heightened political and racial divisions.

Rev. Dr. Dianna N. Watkins-Dickerson is an Adjunct Instructor for Women’s Studies and Religious Studies at the University of Memphis.

The book will be for sale; copies are $25; cash, checks, credit cards, Apple Pay, and Venmo will be accepted.
