Special Thursday Walk - The Woodlands Cemetery
Thursday, May 1, 10 AM
The Woodlands, 4000 Woodland Ave, opposite trolley stop
Meet at Hamilton Mansion inside the cemetery [Google Map]
The Woodlands is the former country home of William Hamilton, and is one of the nation's most sophisticated neoclassical houses from the years following the Revolution. The property was reshaped in 1786 to reflect contemporary English picturesque landscape and horticultural ideals.
In 1840 the estate was transformed into a rural cemetery, still active today. Thomas Eakins and Rembrandt Peale are two of them many notable people buried here. The site includes two 18th century buildings, elaborate Victorian funerary monuments, curving green spaces and majestic trees.
Afterward, some us may go to Saad's Halal Restaurant, 4500 Walnut Street, for down-home Middle Eastern food. Falafel around $9, kabob sandwiches around $15, platters higher.
Please register on line or at 267-444-4507 (M-F, 9-6) so you can see who else is coming and arrange carpooling, and so we can let you know if plans change.
Everyone welcome. Cemetery free (pay for your own lunch). Registration strongly encouraged.
