Classical Mythology in Classical Music
Elizabeth Springuel, soprano, and Barbara Browne, piano
Saturday, October 26, 2 PM
Memorial Church of the Good Shepherd, 3820 The Oak Road, [Google Map]
Classical music has a rich tradition of drawing from the written arts and many of your favorite composers found inspiration in the mythology and stories of antiquity. In Classical Mythology and Classical Music, audiences get to experience first hand just how deep this tradition goes, from Purcell’s classic lament in Dido and Aeneas, to Mozart’s earliest work in a comic Intermezzo titled Apollo et Hyacinthus, on through the Romantic era art songs of Debussy, Schubert and Boulanger harkening back to the goddess Diana, the flute of Pan, and the travails of Ulysses. Finally reaching into the 20th century with the contemporary classic Orpheus with his Lute by William Schumann. This recital highlights the rich diversity of musical representation of some of western cultures most enduring stories.
Pianist Barbara Browne plays a wide range of solo styles, performs with singers and instrumentalists. She has served as adjunct piano faculty at Cabrini University, vocal coach at Westminster Choir College, and performed, accompanied and taught at many institutions locally and nationally. She has performed for four other popular Village music events over the years.
Soprano Elizabeth Springuel is an Associate Instructor in the Augustine and Culture Seminar Program as well as a faculty advisor and co-director of the ACS Concert Series. She holds an undergraduate degree in vocal music performance from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Her graduate degree is focused in the field of education. Ms. Springuel enjoys performing both secular and sacred works locally as a soloist and ensemble member.
