About this event
Tour of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, with Kathi DiMenna
Friday, June 28, 10 AM
Meet outside entrance on 18th Street north of Ben Franklin Parkway [Google map]
The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, now also the Shrine of Saint Katherine Drexel, is a Historic Landmark located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway of Philadelphia. Building began in 1846 with Bishop Kenrick and was continued by his successors; Bishop Newman and Bishop Wood. Napoleon LeBrun was the architect of the Cathedral. He had helped to design the US Capitol while Constantino Brumidi, who painted the US Capital dome also painted the dome of this Cathedral. Cardinal Rigali oversaw the latest renovations in 2007. It is currently the seat of Archbishop Nelson Perez who presides over the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. As of 2014 the number of Parishioners in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia was 1,486,058. It has grown from a few thousand families in the early 18th century to a visible and vibrant faith community today.
Join us for a private tour of this historic site with Village member Kathi DiMenna. A $2 donation is suggested, payable at the Cathedral. Afterward, some of us may want to have lunch nearby or wander the Parkway or Center City.
Please register in advance on line, or at 267-444-4507 (M-F, 9-6), as the size of the tour is limited.
Getting there: If driving, allow time to find an on-street parking space. If traveling by SEPTA, take the 9 AM train from East Falls Station to Suburban Station, or the 32 bus (8:50 at Henry Ave. and Queen Street) to 19th and Cherry Streets. Either will give you time for a cup of coffee at the Sister Cities Cafe across the street from the cathedral.
Members and their guests. $2 donation at event. Registration required.
