Public Education: Public Good or Private Benefit?

Exploring the issues with Dale Mezzacappa

The gaps in what PA's 500 school districts pay per pupil are among the highest in the country, with less money often spent on students who have the greatest needs, while more money is spent on students with fewer needs. This paradox led to the Commonwealth Court ‘s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional.

Dale Mezzacappa will explore the background, remedies, and politics involved in finding a more equitable system for funding our schools.

Ms. Mezzacappa is a journalist whose decades-long reporting on the many challenges facing Philadelphia and Commonwealth schools has been the focus of her career. She was an education reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer, an editor at The Public School Notebook, and is currently a senior writer for Chalkbeat Philadelphia.

She has also been a member of The Old Academy Players in East Falls for many years.

Everyone welcome.  Free. No advance registration.
