Bartram’s Garden
Philadelphia claims to be America's Garden Capital, with more than 30 gardens within 30 miles of the city. The Village has visited nearly half of them over the years, and now will return to a favorite.
Bartram’s Garden is a botanical garden, historic estate, National Historic Landmark, and public park founded by botanist John Bartram in the 1700s.. It is the oldest such garden in the U.S. and contains native plants collected and propagated by the Bartrams as well as imported ornamentals popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Accessibility: Plenty see no matter what. There’s a paved one-mile trail. Elsewhere, expect trails of mown grass, gravel, or dirt, some with inclines and steps.
