TOUR CANCELLED - THUNDERSTORMS PREDICTED!
We'll reschedule - Watch for it in the Weekly Update
Considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the U.S., Andalusia stand on a wooded promontory overlooking the Delaware River north of Philadelphia. The original house was built in 1797 and added on to by America's first professional architect, Benjamin Latrobe, and was lived in by generations of the Biddle family.
Andalusia was the country home of Nicholas Biddle, President of the Second Bank of the U.S. The furnishings are original to the period. The library contains over 3,000 rare volumes, including a signed copy of Lewis and Clark's journals. One of the rooms displays objects related to the 48 year Naval career of Commodore Biddle.
The spectacular gardens and woodlands feature rare plants and trees, and collections of roses, peonies, azaleas and much more.
We will take the 11 a.m. guided tour of the house (approximately 1 hour) and a self-guided garden tour at our own pace (perhaps another hour). The cost is $20. Reservations are required, either here on line or at 267-444-4507 (M-F, 9-6), so we can make these arrangements with Andalusia. There are 5 steps into the first floor of the house, and stairs to the second floor for those who wish to see it.
**THE CUT-OFF DATE FOR REGISTERING IS JULY 17.**
We will meet at the library to carpool at 9:30..
** Andalusia advises that their restroom facilities are limited, and suggest a rest stop break before arriving at the hosues.
