OUR NEIGHBORHOOD—THE LONG DEEP VIEW

On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at 7:00 pm on Zoom, Mt. Airy resident David Young will speak on his book, The Battles of Germantown.

David Young’s research has taken him behind the polished façade of historic houses to discover the voices of the suffering, the proud, and the oppressed. A reviewer writing about The Battles of Germantown in The Journal of Urban Affairs commented that “[in this] … powerful new book... Young is eager for public history to move beyond what he calls 'building-ism’… to focus …on a fuller appreciation for the communities and social engagement processes that make and remake history on a daily basis...” the “battles” of the title.

Participants are encouraged to read The Battles of Germantown before the presentation. This book, a winner of the Pennsylvania Historical Association’s 2020 Philip S. Klein Book Prize, is available on Amazon and at Temple University Press (tupress.temple.edu).

Dr. Young has led historical organizations such as Cliveden and the Johnson House.  He is currently the executive director of the Delaware Historical Society.
