PRIVATE TOUR OF THE TENEMENT MUSEUM IN NEW YORK!

East Falls Village members will have an exclusive, private tour of one of the most unique museums in New York – the Tenement Museum. The tour will be led by a Museum Educator and we’ll have a chance to ask questions, via the Zoom Chat Box, throughout the Tour.
Our Tour will focus on the Moore Family – Joseph and Bridget Moore, Irish immigrants who were living with their 3 daughters at 97 Orchard Street in 1869. We will “visit” their tenement apartment to understand their daily life and discuss their experiences as Irish New Yorkers, living in what was then the heart of the ‘Little Germany’ neighborhood. The Moores were one of two Irish families in the tenement building; German Protestants lived in the other 20 apartments. The Moore apartment has been recreated and we will learn about Irish traditions, customs, and faith as well as the discrimination they faced. The Tour will also include pre-recorded video, audio, and images.
Two Village members – Karen Minyard and John Gillespie – have visited the Tenement Museum in person and highly recommend it. Because of COVID, the Museum has created these virtual tours. These virtual tours have some advantages over the in-person tours: no hassle or expense of getting to New York, no steps to climb (the museum is not handicapped accessible), the one-hour tour can be experienced from the comfort of your own home, and closed captions are available for the tour.
