What is this?
(Directions to Cope House: after entering the Arboretum, from Chew Ave between Washington Lane and Haines St., bear left to house at top of driveway. Parking is behind the house.)
Our tour of Awbury Arboretum begins at Cope House with a video of Awbury's history: the estate was originally purchased by Henry Cope, a Quaker shipping merchant, in 1852. Various Victorian and Colonial Revival houses were built on the property between 1860 and the 1920's, forming a unique cultural landscape.
Awbury's lands were laid out in the 19th century by William Saunders, who also designed the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, and the Capitol ground in Washington.
In 1985, the Awbury Arboretum Association was established as a not-for-profit corporation to promote the Arboretum for the well-being of the community
The Arboretum comprises 55 acres of meadow, ponds, woods and lawns in Germantown, the largest open space in this part of the city.
We will explore the grounds on paths covered with wood chips. The Arboretum is too large for us to cover all of it, but we will get a sampling of the various habitats.
If you would like to bring a picnic, we can have lunch at the picnic tables after the 11:30 conclusion of our tour.
The entrance fee is $5, and there is a minimum of 5 people required for a tour.
Meet at the library at 9:30 to carpool, or at Cope House, at the Arboretum at 10 for our tour.
Please register here online or at 267-444-4507 (M-F, 9-6), so the Arboretum knows to expect you.
